LIONS ICED CHRISTMAS CAKE PROJECT
|
Brooklyn Mall24 November 2007 & 1st December 2007 For the last 19 years the Pretoria South Lions Club has sold Iced Lions Christmas Cakes to the public in Pretoria just before Christmas.
We work together with the Cake Decorators' Guild, who do most of the work, but they consider this as a contribution to charity and they do it willingly and brilliantly. For weeks beforehand the ladies mould and prepare decorations for the cakes in the form of Father Christmases, Bells, Snowmen, Choir Boys, Sleighs, Stained Glass Windows, Christmas Trees, Parcels, Stars, Lamps, etc., etc. These are all made of Icing and are completely edible.
On the Project days we have the equivalent of an assembly line where we unwrap Lions Christmas Cakes, the ladies mount them on cake boards, brush them with apricot jam, cover them with marzipan and then fondant icing, pipe a shell border where the cake meets the board, and decorate the top and sides of the cake with the prepared decorations, and the finished articles are magnificent. The public watch the whole process and then buy the iced cakes from the Lions.
Once a few cakes are decorated the public start to choose their own decorations, and, in most cases, they do their shopping while their particular cakes are being prepared. We have now been doing this project at the Brooklyn Mall for many years (we were previously at various other Centres), and find that we simply cannot keep up with the demand, although we operate on the last Saturday in November and the first Saturday in December.
In addition to the Iced Cakes, we sell the normal boxed Lions Christmas Cakes, and we also run a raffle for an Iced Cake each Saturday. This gives us tremendously good exposure, is a "fun" project, and raises worthwhile funds for our Lions Project account. Lion Ralph Webber - Project Chairman.
